After much prayer, the Lord has impressed on my heart that it’s time for CFBC to select a Pastor Search Team. Brother Gary served this Body for roughly 19 years, and you’ve given me the privilege of serving for 23 years. Our next pastor is going to be so blessed to shepherd you spiritually by preaching and teaching the Word and by providing Spirit-anointed leadership. This decision comes as a result of . . .
GOD’S PURPOSE—Proverbs 3:5-6. This is God’s purpose for me as His bondservant and for this church as the Body of Christ.
GOD’S PROVISION— For the last 23 years, I have been praying for the Lord to bless this church spiritually, numerically, and financially. HE HAS! CFBC is in a healthy and stable position. We have a great staff filled with godly and gifted men and women who are passionate for the glory of our Lord and the advancement of His kingdom. This is the time to transition!
GOD’S PROCESS— The Lord has given me a new assignment and that is to shepherd this wonderful church through a Christ-honoring transition to a new Pastor. At the end of this service you will be handed an information sheet in an effort to answer any lingering questions you might have.
GOD’S PROMISE— You can count on the Lord to lead the Pastor Search Team to a godly, Spirit-filled Pastor who will love you and lead you to glorify God by totally committing yourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ and to the explosive growth of His kingdom!
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. – Philippians 1:6
Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, 21 equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. – Hebrews 13:20–21
To God Be The Glory,

Pastor Chuck Herring
On March 14th, 2026, Pastor Chuck shared that the Lord has given him a new assignment, and that is leading CFBC to transition to a new Senior Pastor. Twenty-three years ago, Pastor Chuck answered the call of God to become the Senior Pastor of Collierville First Baptist Church. Over these years, the Lord Jesus has blessed our ministry. Souls have been saved, believers have matured in their faith, new churches have been planted, and missionaries and church planters have been sent out to expand the kingdom.
Our first step will be to form a Pastor Search Team. During the search process, Pastor Chuck will continue to preach and teach, lead the staff, and provide pastoral care to the Body of Christ until the next pastor is called. The pastor will announce his retirement prior to the arrival of the new pastor.
With this announcement, we want to answer any questions you might have.
1. To help ensure qualified candidates for this important responsibility, church members will be invited during a Sunday morning worship service to nominate individuals for consideration. A nomination form outlining the qualifications for serving on the Pastor Search Team will be available that morning.
The Deacon Officers and two additional deacons will review all nominations and prayerfully develop a slate of eleven (11) candidates—nine members and two alternates. They will interview prospective nominees, explain the responsibilities and expectations for serving on this team, and confirm each person’s willingness and availability to faithfully serve if elected.
Once the slate of eleven candidates has been developed, the list will be presented to the deacons for their approval. After the deacons approve the candidates, the slate will then be presented to the church for approval at the conclusion of a Sunday morning service.
1. Spiritual Maturity and Character—He/she must be a mature believer who demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23), has a clear understanding of Scriptural qualifications for the office of Pastor (1 Timothy 3:1–7 and Titus 1:5–9), is committed to prayerfully seeking the Lord’s direction, and is able to maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
2. Commitment to the Church Body and its Core Values—This person must be willing to set aside personal preferences and agendas in order to pursue the will of the Lord. He/she must practice biblical stewardship, actively participate in our worship and connect group ministries, be familiar with the church’s history, culture, ministries, and—most importantly—its 7 core values. The person who serves on this crucial team must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with others. In addition, the individual must be a church member and at least 18 years of age (bylaw requirement).
3. Competence and Skill—A member of the Pastor Search Team must possess the ability to evaluate a candidate’s character, calling, and potential ministry impact beyond a résumé. This person should have leadership experience and be willing to attend meetings regularly and travel when necessary.
1. He/she is responsible for identifying, screening, interviewing, and recommending a new Senior Pastor to the Body of Christ. The committee will review résumés, conduct appropriate background checks, and oversee the entire search process until a candidate is presented to the church for a vote and, upon approval, called to serve.
2. Members of this team will seek a godly man who is a Southern Baptist and has been duly ordained. His Christian character and biblical qualifications must be consistent with the office of pastor as outlined in the Bible.
1. The Pastor Search Team will present to the church the name of only one man at a time for consideration. When this team is led by the Lord to recommend a candidate to serve as Senior Pastor, and the candidate has indicated his willingness to accept the call, the committee will then provide at least one week’s notice of a business meeting at which time it will present its report and recommendation to the church.
2. The candidate will preach a trial sermon during a Sunday morning worship service at an agreed upon date. In the days immediately preceding the trial sermon, opportunities will be provided for the candidate to meet with the church’s organizational leaders, the Deacon Body, and church members.
3. The vote to extend a call to the candidate will be conducted by secret ballot immediately following the trial sermon. No other individuals will be considered, and no nominations will be accepted from the floor. Notice of the trial sermon and the election will be announced at least one week in advance.
No. Our bylaws specify the process whereby the next pastor is identified utilizing a Pastor Search Team and approved by the church after a trial sermon by way of a secret ballot.
Actively pray for the committee’s wisdom, unity, and discernment; and pray that the Lord will lead them to the man He has chosen to be our next pastor.
Recommend Candidates: Offer names of potential candidates but try to provide full resumes rather than just names.
Maintain Confidentiality & Patience: Respect that the process is sensitive and may take time; avoid putting pressure on the committee to reveal candidates.
Before we started the process for looking for a new senior pastor, our church participated in 21 Days of Prayer. This guide was to assist you, the church, in praying for wisdom and discernment in the selection of the Pastor Search Team, to receive God’s clear leadership in identifying our next pastor, and to keep our search unified and focused on its mission. Our 21 Days of Prayer have concluded but we encourage everyone to persist in prayer and to click the links below for use the guide attached below anytime throughout this process.
On Sunday, June 7th, the deacons presented the slate of eleven candidates for the Pastor Search Team. The following Sunday, June 14th, the church took a vote on the candidates for the Search Team. The church affirmed the team. Hover over the pictures for the name of those serving on the Pastor Search Team.
One of the best ways to help out during this process is to pray! We know that the Lord hears the prayers of His people. Psalm 145:18 says, “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth (ESV).” Below is a list of prayer points for our Pastor Search Team.
